The House

An 18th-century house in the heart of the old town.

Erotokritos is a Venetian-Ottoman building restored in 2020. We kept the stone arches, the timber roofs, and the history—and added the comforts of a modern boutique hotel.

With just four suites arranged around a serene inner courtyard, it remains what it has always been: a private, quiet home in the centre of Rethymno.

Rethymno's old town is a layering of Venetian and Turkish hands, where upper storeys lean out over the lanes on wooden parapets. Erotokritos sits inside it — a house from the eighteenth century, on a quiet street, a few paces from the noise but never in it.

We renovated it in 2020 and kept what was worth keeping. The old stone is still in the walls. Around the inner courtyard and its garden there are four suites: parquet and marble, deep baths, private entrances, kitchens you can genuinely cook in. One has a terrace of its own, with a hot tub open to the sky.

The Poem

Our suites are named for the Erotokritos — the romance Vitsentzos Kornaros wrote in Cretan, four hundred years ago, and which Crete has been reciting ever since.

Erotokritos

is the hero.

is the woman he loves.

is the king, her father, who stands between them.

Artemis

we borrowed from the goddess.

The poem ends with the lovers together. We think that is the right note for a house to be named after.
